Recent California News!
This past month the state of California has unveiled many new plans designed to protect our environment– furthering their steps toward sustainability. Below I will summarize two of them:
The Call for a Selective Irrigation Ban
Now sits on Governor Newsom’s desk, awaiting approval
Would ban use of of portable drinkable water to irrigate certain “ornamental lawns”
At businesses, facilities, etc.
Does not include private homes, parks, graveyards, golf courses, or athletic fields
Requires recycled water for irrigation
Designed to encourage replacement of grass for more sustainable landscapes
Would begin in 2027 and roll out in stages
Has had substantial support
Including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Heal the Bay and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
The Call For Company Carbon Transparency
“First-in-the-nation bill” approved by California Legislature, now awaiting on Newsom’s decision
Has received an outcry of complaints by businesses, oil companies, etc.
The bill being accused of likely leading to fraud accounts
Companies making over 1 billion in California (~5300 corporations) would be required to comply
Would have to report their carbon (and other greenhouse gas) emissions every year
Outline the tons of emitted gasses from direct and indirect sources (“scope 3” emissions)
Companies would be given until 2030 until inaccurate report fines pursued
Could lead to greater accountability and transparency
Requirements of carbon reports already required in the UK
